Do you love the outdoors and working in community? We’re looking for a few lead stewards at the Garden Greenway and Sisson Meadow and you can help!

SLT’s amazing Garden Greenway Trail Steward, Jack Moore.

Siskiyou Land Trust manages its lands with a stewardship team model. Our properties in Mt. Shasta are maintained and cared for by dedicated volunteers. Stewardship work for each location is coordinated by a lead steward who is responsible for a list of activities and tasks. Those who want to help but can’t take on a lead steward role can add their names to our volunteer call-out email list to receive information about work days and projects. Take a look at the descriptions below, then email us at siskiyoulandtrust@gmail.com to let us know how you can help.

The Garden Greenway

Home to a large garden space, a growing community orchard, edible alley ways, and more projects to come, the Garden Greenway across from Sisson School needs a team of lead stewards for special projects.

Lead Steward positions

Garden Manager: This lead steward is responsible for maintaining garden infrastructure (fencing, irrigation, garden shed, picnic tables) and coordinating needed repairs or maintenance with the group or organization that is growing food in the garden. This does not include watering, planting, weeding or harvesting.

Community Orchard steward: This lead steward will care for the existing fruit trees, including watering, fertilizing, pruning and generally maintaining the health of the trees (currently 5). This steward will have the opportunity to work with community members and school children to plant additional trees. As trees mature, this steward will help coordinate community harvesting days.

Edible Alley steward: This lead steward will manage the existing blackberry edible alley and participate in planting additional berries. This role will entail multiple work sessions, with volunteers, throughout the summer to keep the bushes cut back. As additional berries are planted, it will include watering, fertilizing, pruning and generally maintaining the health of the plants.

Garden Greenway volunteer tasks (non-leadership opportunities):

  • Mowing and weed eating along trails
  • Spreading wood chips on trails
  • Weeding landscaping around front of garden

If you’d like to be informed for volunteer work days, send us an email at siskiyoulandtrust@gmail.com and we’ll add you to our volunteer email list.

Sisson Meadow stewardship

Co-lead stewards, Dennis McFall and Sam Baxter, with regular volunteer Neil Jacobs.

Sisson Meadow requires year round maintenance and care, which we accomplish with a dedicated lead steward and several work days in the spring, summer and fall. This steward visits the meadow several times a week and is the face of the Land Trust to the public. Our long-time co-lead stewards are retiring and are happy to help the new lead steward get clear on the roles and its tasks.

Lead Steward tasks:

Routine care: weekly trash pick-up, 3 to 5 visits per week

Monthly tasks: refill dog waste bag dispensers, trimming along board walks and picnic area as needed (using Land Trust tools), check for any needed maintenance in boardwalk, bench, picnic areas, waterfall areas, refill info sheets in Audubon birding kiosk

Seasonal tasks: Organize and lead a spring and fall meadow clean up day, winter maintenance of decomposed granite in picnic area, work with Sisson Meadow Art Committee to coordinate installation of new art pieces

Call to Action –

If you are interested in becoming a lead steward, email us at siskiyoulandtrust@gmail.com to let us know you’re interested. We’ll arrange a meeting to get to know each other and discuss the role. SLT will select a lead steward for each of the positions and notify those folks that they’ve been selected.
