Thamar Wheritt loved animals and her land with a deep affection and care. Siskiyou Land Trust worked with Thamar for many years to craft a means of protecting her 600+ acres outside of Mt. Shasta in a way that would provide for wildlife and clean water after her passing. Thamar left this life, she “graduated” as she called it, on August 10, 2019.  (In the photo at the right, Thamar celebrates the closing of her conservation easement in 2018.) A conservation easement held by CalFire has set the direction for how that land will be stewarded in perpetuity. In early 2020, Siskiyou Land Trust will become the owner of that land and take on the stewardship tasks and responsibilities first hand.

Thamar was well loved by so many, and several have asked how they can best honor her. SLT is working with the Wyehka Trust (which is managing a portion of Thamar’s estate) to create a memorial native, pollinator-friendly wildflower planting along the edge of the picnic area in Sisson Meadow. It will be a wild planting, with a memorial stone bench, set in a place that friends of Thamar’s can visit and think of her. Sisson Meadow is a restored wetland in the city of Mt. Shasta owned and stewarded by Siskiyou Land Trust that is open to the public year round. In the spring of 2020 we will work together to create that wild garden.
