Deep in the Ishi Wilderness of Tehama County, CA Open Lands Executive Director, Ali Meders-Knight leads a force of restoration professionals earning their S212 Chainsaw Certification and incorporating Indigenous Traditional Ecological Knowledge into post-fire restoration work. This September, members of the Siskiyou Land Trust Stewardship and Acquisition teams were invited into the scar of the Park Fire (’24) with California Open Lands to learn about their restoration workforce and place-based traditional knowledge training.
What an incredible opportunity for SLT to connect with and learn about the natural resources of northern California. We hope to bring opportunities for these kinds of trainings to Siskiyou County, deepening our own understanding of how we can work for the land we steward. Thank you to Ali and all those who shared their stories and hopes for collaboration and reciprocity with our team.Â
Meet the Newest Faces of Conservation
A hearty welcome to the newest members of the Siskiyou Land Trust team! SLT is a host site for California Climate Action Corps (CCAC), a state-level service corps created to take meaningful action to safeguard the climate through wildfire resiliency, urban greening, and food waste recovery. Meet our new class of Fellows and say ‘Howdy!’ if you see them out in the field.Â
Biodiversity, River Stewardship, and Community ConnectionÂ
Both the 2025 Biodiversity Week and Dunsmuir River Cleanup this month were huge successes! Together with Mount Shasta Bioregional Ecology Center and the California Native Plant Society, we were able to engage in meaningful citizen science and document this region’s staggering biodiversity.
Siskiyou Land Trust showed up in force for the first Dunsmuir River Cleanup since 2019. Thanks to support from Dunsmuir Rotary and CalTrout, we were able to pull roughly 600lbs of trash from the Sacremento River. SLT Board member, Bruce Berlinger, ended up pulling nearly 200lbs out of Vollmers Flats himself. Wow!
September was a month especially full of community connection and partnerships. SLT is proud to be a part of a community of individuals and organizations working together to steward the irreplaceable wild places, watersheds, and working lands that are the heart of Siskiyou County. Thank you for being a part of that team. We couldn’t do it without you.Â
Come learn about how Conservation Easements (CEs) work and how they can benefit your family, your land, and help protect Siskiyou County’s vital landscapes. These workshops focus on CEs over agricultural lands and provide information about the state and federal programs that support our work.
