The Fungus Are Among Us!
Mushrooms were the focus of our October Nature Walks. Due to this year’s precipitation, the mushroom season has been incredible, abundant and diverse. Local realtor and mushroom expert, Aaron Cena, took us on our first October “Mushroom Mosey” where we meandered only 1/2 mile over the course of a few hours because there were mushrooms to identify everywhere!

A week later we hosted a Mushroom Bioblitz with Jayme Castro of the Mount Shasta Mycological Society at Luginbuhl Headwaters Preserve. This Bioblitz resulted in documenting 59 different species, a staggering amount!

Thank you to our trip leaders Aaron Cena, David Kent, and Jayme Castro and all of you who joined us on these mushroom hunts on SLT’s conserved properties. Missed out on the fun? There is another chance to join in the hunt this November, keep scrolling to learn more and sign up.

Members of the Land Protection Academy
Statewide Connections and Resources
Alexis Robertson, SLT Acquisition Director, is back from a week-long sojourn to the oak woodland hills outside San Jose with the Land Protection Academy. The Academy is a two-year commitment designed to foster professional development, leadership growth, and meaningful connections among land trust professionals.

This Academy connects early- and mid-career professionals with experienced leaders in the field to cultivate inclusive, cross-generational relationships and strengthen the broader land trust community while inspiring and training the next generation of leaders.

Alexis at home with her wooly friends

As a leader within Siskiyou Land Trust, Alexis builds a strong foundation for the organization, making sure SLT meets the standards and practices necessary to uphold our conservation commitments in perpetuity.

As a landowner and rancher, Alexis brings a unique perspective to her role at SLT. She understands the relationship landowners have with their working lands and is well-versed in the day-to-day operations and economics of agriculture. SLT is grateful for her leadership, point of view, and the opportunity for her participation in the 2025 Land Protection Academy Cohort, which will bring enhanced resources and knowledge to Siskiyou County.

One month until the Global Day of Giving!
Giving Tuesday is a movement that began in 2012 to promote charitable giving during the Thanksgiving holiday season. It has become an international phenomenon with billions of dollars donated online to nonprofit organizations on the first Tuesday following Thanksgiving Day. Here in the far north of California, the effort is organized and implemented by our friends over at Community Foundation of the North State.

North State Giving Tuesday is an online event and most of the activity will take place via the North State Giving Tuesday website. Mark your calendars and stay tuned for more information.
