The Mt. Shasta High School Sustainability Club is playing a major role in land stewardship this year. In February the students organized a weed pull in the Sisson Meadow, clearing scotch broom and non-native Himalayan blackberry plants that had spread into the meadow’s interior.

We are beyond grateful to these wonderful students and future leaders! Many thanks to the Sustainability Club President Seth Bleazard, and to club members Jake Bleazard, Nathaniel Bekaert, Madeline Towner and Zora Lovrak, and MSHS science teacher Donna Chapman.

“I started the Sustainability Club because I wanted to protect the outdoor spaces that I recreate in.” Bleazard explained. “Through climbing, skiing, and mountain biking, I have come to value the beautiful place I live in.”

The group also has plans to help in the SLT Garden this year. Along with activities led by Mt. Shasta Community Resource Center, the Garden will continue to be an educational center and source of produce shared with the community.

We also want to thank the Mt. Shasta High students who are this year’s Yosemite Institute participants. These energetic kids dedicated a portion of their community volunteer component to cleaning up the paths and hauling broken branches in the Sisson Meadow area next to the library, and plan more work once the snow melts. Thanks to Ellery DeArton, Brooks Andrus, Logan Malee and Angelina Koster.

SLT office organizing received a much needed boost from Mt. Shasta High School senior Azalea Bornman Riggs who cleared and helped organize our archives so we’d have space for staff to move in.  Thank you Azalea for bringing your quick paced and upbeat tempo to help a local non-profit and best wishes on your journey to college next year  The office is now a hub of staff activity every workday. Stop by and say hello.

Siskiyou Land Trust welcomes volunteerism from students needing to complete community service hours for their high school requirements. And we encourage students to design a senior project with the Siskiyou Land Trust and SLT mentors who can support such activities.
