Local Screening of Pedal-Driven: A Bike-Umentary Movie

Friday, February 3rd at 7 PM at the Black Bear Gallery in Mount Shasta.

The Mount Shasta Trails Association asked us to pass this along to our members…….

Subject: Local Screening of “Pedal-Driven”: A Bike-Umentary and Update on the Gateway Trails project

The Mount Shasta Trails Association, the US Forest Service, and the International Mountain Biking Association will be showing the new documentary film “Pedal-Driven” on Friday, February 3rd at 7 PM at the Black Bear Gallery in Mount Shasta.

This award winning one-hour documentary examines the issues surrounding mountain bike trail management and conflicts between mountain bikers and public land management agencies like the US Forest Service. “Our primary theme here revolves around sustainability”, said writer/director Jamie Howell. “Mountain biking is exploding around the world. We have to find new, cooperative approaches that both allow it as a legitimate use and manage it in a way that prevents the destruction of our precious and limited natural spaces.”

For more than two years, the filmmaking team traveled across the Western United States, compelled to tell a story of clandestine groups of rogue mountain bikers who build illegal trails on America’s public lands. Footage was collected from both sides of the conflict, battle lines were drawn, illegal trails were ripped out and existing trails were shut down. Along the way, a shift occurred with both sides coming to the table, new partnerships were forged and sustainable biking opportunities were built. The film aims to inspire a dialogue about where mountain biking belongs on the American landscape and to explore the responsibility we all have to balance our personal interests with the need manage our public lands in a sustainable manner. The film is laced with stunning scenery, thrilling ride scenes with professional riders, and candid interviews with land managers, mountain bikers, and community leaders from around the West.

Representatives from the US Forest Service, the Mount Shasta Trail Association, and the International Mountain Bike Association will be on hand to discuss the issues raised by the film and to foster a constructive dialog about mountain bike trail management and opportunities in our community. In addition, there will be an update on the Gateway Trail project, an exciting new recreation trail built in cooperation between the Forest Service and the Mount Shasta Trail Association.

You can find out more about the film and watch a trailer at www.pedaldriven.org

Siskiyou Land Trust presents January’s slideshow!

January 3rd, 7 p.m. at the Mount Shasta Resort

Siskiyou Land Trust will host a slideshow highlighting Antarctic wildlife and geography by Steve Morrell on Tuesday, January 3, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Mount Shasta Resort. Morrell spent five Southern Hemisphere summers in the 1970′s and 80′s studying Adelie penguins and South Polar skuas at Cape Crozier on Ross Island in the Antarctic.

Cape Crozier is at the interface of the Ross Ice Shelf, 200,000 square miles of floating glacial ice, and the Ross Sea.  It is also home to the southernmost breeding colony of Emperor penguins, a site first visited by Edward Wilson who was a member of Robert Scott’s ill-fated expedition to the South Pole. The winter trek to Cape Crozier by Wilson and his two companions is detailed in The Worst Journey in the World.

In addition to wildlife photos, Morrell will include pictures of nearby Antarctic landscapes including Mt. Erebus, a 12,000 foot volcano, the Dry Valleys, and the Erebus Glacier tongue.

Suggested donation is $5 per person

  • Siskiyou Land Trust Slide Show Series  Presents “Turkey by Bicycle”

  • Please join us for another presentation in our series of  informative and enjoyable slide shows about culture, travel and adventure on Tuesday, Nov. 1st at Mt. Shasta Resort  Highland Room (upstairs) at 7 PM. $5 donation requested.
  • In April and May, 2010 Linda Roddy and Mike Hupp  spent 5  weeks touring Turkey’s Aegean-Mediterranean coast and the  Cappadocia region  using folding bicycles, a gulet (a 40-50 foot commercial  yacht), ferries, a  rented scooter and public buses.  Traveling on their own  with Linda’s trusty  Lonely Planet Guide and no fixed schedule, they were able  to adapt their plans  and travel to the countryside. Throughout the  trip, they  stayed in small pansiyons (a Turkish bed and breakfast) that provided great  meals and information about things to see and do in the local neighborhood.  Every place they traveled, the Turkish people were friendly and helpful.  Language was not a barrier, though there were some interesting  ”conversations” in more remote villages. When they were  lost in small towns  (which happened often), someone always stepped up and  helped them find their  way.
  • The Siskiyou Land Trust and the River Run Gallery have teamed up for a Art Show.
